The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was indeed marked by many touching moments, one of which was the inspiring story of David Lower, a 79-year-old Navy Veteran from Gilbert, Arizona. Lower participated in Event #59: $1,000 Super Seniors and achieved a significant milestone by cashing in his first-ever WSOP tournament, finishing 42nd out of 3,362 participants, earning $9,709.
Demonstrating his generous spirit
Lower donated $5,000 of his winnings to aid in securing a double lung transplant for Shannon Zane King, the son of a close high school friend from Oklahoma. Shannon is currently in hospital in Oklahoma City, facing severe health challenges.
Lower’s actions have helped his friend’s son and encouraged the poker community to support this cause. Donations to help Shannon Zane King can be made through HelpHopeLive.org, a 501(c)(3) organization, or directly to the South-Central Transplant Fund in his honor.
Reflecting on his decision to donate, Lower shared
“Shannon is the son of one of my high school classmates back in Oklahoma. She and I have been friends since high school. When I found out about Shannon’s illness, I told her that I would donate half of any winnings. Not having cashed in six previous Senior Events, this was my first Super Seniors and my only cash.”
Lower’s story is a testament to the generosity and compassion within the poker community. He illustrates how the game can bring people together and support those in need.
